In Memory of Samuel Max Morelock

Bubby’s family and friends know how passionate he was about the art of fishing and your gift benefitting Trout Unlimited’s Kid’s Fishing Day will help carry on Bubby’s love for the outdoors to children in the Greeneville/Greene County community who may otherwise not get an opportunity to fish. Each child receives a fishing rod to keep and learns the method of catching fish from Trout Unlimited volunteers.

About Samuel Max “Bubby” Morelock

September 4, 2003 – March 5, 2023

Samuel Max Morelock, “Bubby,” was born September 4, 2003 in Greeneville Tennessee to the parents of Lewis Morelock and Maxi Douthat. His sister, Abbi called him Bubby just hours after his birth and it would be his name to family and close friends for the rest of his life.

His passions in life were family, friends, his Chevy truck, named Donna White, his cat, Buddha, nature, and most of all fishing.

He was an avid fly fisherman with a great interest in the native Brook Trout. He was proud to have fished all local Brook Trout streams and to have caught fish from every stream from Paint Creek to Erwin. He had a secret fishing spot known only to him and a few close companions he chose to disclose it to.

He found great peace in the mountains and by the water. He felt you could heal your body and mind by walking on the Earth with bare feet and soaking in natural waters. He considered himself very fortunate to have fished with Ben, the Huge Fly Fisherman and was captured in a Huge Fly Fisherman YouTube video. His passion for fishing started with his father taking him and his sister to the First Annual Kids Fishing Day with Trout Unlimited at Dillard Ponds in Viking Mountain. He was hooked and a fairly independent fisherman by the age of 12.

In his own words found in his journal, “I am courageous, outgoing, caring, and loving.” If you knew him, you would agree. You would also describe him as kind, polite, and honest with great sense of humor. He lived only 19 years, 6 months, and 1 day on this Earth. He had an old soul and just understood life in a way his peers could not.

He appreciated Mother Earth and leaned on Jesus to help him through his time on this Earth, as evidenced by a quote also found in his journal, “Breathe Me.”

He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and was very proud to have been baptized in the name of the Lord in Paint Creek on a chilly spring day.

He loved fiercely as referenced by a love letter to his girlfriend, Gray Kilday, writing “My love for you is like a river. Steady, constant, and forever.”
